There has always existed a very lively and interesting South African music scene. In fact an number of world class Jazz musicians are of South African origin. The music that attracts attention right now is Kwaito - a form of Hip Hop with an distinct south African flavour. Nadime Gordimer (Nobel Prize winner) and André Brink belong to an older generation of authors. The backdrop to much of their work was South Africa and the oppressive atmosphere of apartheid. Today, among others, its the author J.M Coetzee who enacts relevant questions about south Africa today in light of it´s history.
